Where to go on holiday in October

Just because the summer is over doesn’t mean the holidays need to be. Here are my top locations for your autumnal getaway.

Cactus garden in Lanzarote

Lanzarote
It’s always beach weather in Lanzarote, with temperatures rarely dipping below 20C. With gorgeous beaches and tempting turquoise waters, this lively Canary Island is packed full of things to keep you happy and entertained while you’re there. It’s great for families, couples who want to explore the secluded quiet areas or a large group of friends who want to take full advantage of its nightlife. Shop till you drop at the Teguise market or head to chilled out Playa de los Pocillos and shut off from the outside world.

Ancient roman Amphitheatre at sunrise, Rome, Lazio, Italy

Rome
If you’re looking for a city break that is still lovely and warm, then this is the one for you. October is one of the most beautiful times of year in Rome, where the evening light casts warm shadows across the city’s beautiful architecture.

Many of the schools across Europe have broken up around the third week of October so if you’re thinking of heading to Rome around that time then expect it to be a bit busy. However, in the Italian capital busy is normal; there’s an enticing buzz about it, the cafes and restaurants are in full swing and the atmosphere is always electric.

Algarve beach, Portugal

Algarve
Although the autumn rain tends to pick up towards the end of October, because of the Algarve’s location it’s still a great time to visit, as the weather is still so warm. If you’re someone who prefers thinner crowds as well, then this is perfect for you. It’s been said that some of the best months in the Algarve are the ones out of peak summer season.

Oktoberfest in Munich, Loewenbraeu brewery's festive tent

Munich
One of the most relaxed and likeable of all the German cities, Munich boasts one of the biggest beer festivals in the world – Oktoberfest. They like a drink in Bavaria, and when they drink, they like to eat. Add beer tents, music – oom-pah-pah to rock – lederhosen and waiters who can heft three full beer steins in each hand and you have Oktoberfest. Held from the last week in September until October 7, the beer festival draws in some 6 million people.

Boston skyline from waterfront

Boston
Compact in size and with plenty of European influences, Boston is one of the USA’s prettiest cities, thanks to a gorgeous skyline, and plenty of history and architecture. Walk the two-and-a-half-mile Freedom Trail for a step back in time through American history, see Old Masters at the Museum of Fine Arts, go modern with a trip to the Skywalk Observatory, catch a Red Sox ball game at Fenway Park and head to Beacon Hill for gorgeous Victorian brick-row houses and Massachusetts State House. A Boston Duck Tour will take you by a unique mode of transport through Boston’s streets before landing in the Charles River and if you’ve ever had American University dreams, head across the river to Cambridge for a peek at Harvard University.

Sunrise in Key West

Florida
October is one of the best months to visit Florida. With the humidity of summer breaking and the Atlantic hurricane season drawing to a close, October is one of the best times of year to visit Florida for the weather alone. Although it’s left summer behind in October, the ‘Sunshine State’ will still give you high temperatures, as well as less rain than over summer. You can expect average temperatures of 30C, with slightly chillier evenings in the northern parts. Florida takes autumn seriously! From Halloween spooktaculars to festive autumn festivals, there are lots of fun activities happening throughout the state—from the Panhandle down to the Keys.
